25-Year-Old Quarterback Signs Deal with the Jets
This past season, the Steelers traded for Bears quarterback Justin Fields and paired him up alongside Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson to form a deadly and dangerous dynamic duo at the position. Wilson started off the season hurt, and Fields was able to come in and lead the Steelers to a solid 4-2 start. The young 25-year-old quarterback could have kept his momentum going, but instead, the team decided to bench him in favor of the Super Bowl champion quarterback in Wilson. After a tough loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Wild Card Round, the Steelers are looking to continue the success they had in 2024. Today, it was announced that Fields has signed a two-year deal with the New York Jets worth $40 million with $30 million being guaranteed.
Fields started off his career with the Chicago Bears as the 11th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. After a few unsuccessful years in Chicago, the Bears decided to move on for Fields when they acquired the number one overall pick from the Carolina Panthers due to their trade involving DJ Moore. Chicago thought the move would be best to acquire some well-needed draft picks to build the team up for new rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. However, the move was best for both teams as Fields played his best stretch of football, and Williams was exposed to the NFL limelight. Heading into the offseason, teams knew the 25-year-old quarterback wasn’t the same kid who spent his time struggling in Chicago, this time, the Jets know they have a solid quarterback who could compete for the next few years.
In six games last season, Fields hurled 1,106 passing yards, five touchdowns, and an interception while completing about 65 percent of his passes. His best game of the season came on September 22nd when the 25-year-old quarterback went 25 of 32, hurling 245 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Fields has the chance to change the narrative for this upcoming season and be included within the top tier of quarterbacks. We’ll see if the Jets have what it takes to change Fields’ career trajectory for the better.
