29-Year-Old Tight End Signs Deal with the Chargers
In a New York Jets season where consistency was hard to come by, Tyler Conklin proved that he can be a dark horse threat on a high-powered offense. Last season, he contributed just about 450 receiving yards as well as four touchdowns, which was his career best. He caught an efficient 71% of his targets and was one of Aaron Rodgers’ favorite red zone options. With Rodgers gone from the Jets’ offense, a decision had to be made by Conklin regarding his next career move.
It was just announced that the Los Angeles Chargers and Conklin have agreed to a one-year deal, as the well-established tight end looks to further put the league on notice as a member of the Chargers next season. The past three seasons with the Jets have been the best of Conklin’s career; he has proven he can be very effective in providing an option when the conventional pass-and-run game is failing. It will be interesting to see how highly the Chargers value him in their offense and the lengths they will go to make him a lead weapon on their roster. There are a lot of teams out there looking for help in the tight end position, and Conklin chose the Chargers’ offense to give himself the best opportunity to succeed.
An opportunity to contribute to a team like the Chargers will give Conklin a chance to further add to his legacy. Having not had the opportunity to contribute to a playoff-ready team in the past few seasons, Conklin will look to do so as a member of the Chargers. Conklin still has some years left and has shown that he can be a great weapon. The impact he has offensively will complement this organization nicely, and it will be exciting to see how effective this signing proves to be.
