Can UConn Pull Off an Upset Against South Carolina While Staying on Top of the Big East?
Within South Carolina rankings, they are now still holding on in the top two standings in the SEC, but once before, they were holding on tight to the undefeated record title, and no other team could compete with their defensive level they had with their starting five line and bench line up as well. South Carolina lost their undefeated title when they went up against Texas and lost 66-62, but Texas was going to come back even harder from losing to them on January 12th with a score of 67-50. South Carolina is still 11-1 in the standings, but LSU has taken the top undefeated title as of right now. The UConn Huskies aren't in the SEC; they are in the Big East, and they are in the top spot in the standings in their conference, 14-0 and 23-3 overall. UConn played St. John’s NY and blew them out 78-40. This team has only lost three games out of their season, which is not bad at all to be in the number one standing. With UConn leading, scoring players are Paige Bueckers, who contributes 18.7 points a game and 4.4 assists. Sarah Strong puts up 16.1 points per game, but she does a significant job with her rebounding with a number of 7.8 and 2.3 with her steals as well as 1.4 blocks, so with that being said, those two particular players are going to come out hard, ready to take South Carolina, being that UConn is ranked number one and South Carolina is ranked number two. This will be a competitive matchup game.
Within this matchup, it's a hard, undecided tie for who will win this game. It will honestly come down to the players really wanting it as much as the coaches do as well. However, within the previous five games, UConn has played against them; they only lost one, and that was to the Tennessee Lady Volunteers. South Carolina was the same as well, but their opponent they fell short to was the Texas Longhorns, which I previously said before. Their freshman Joyce Edwards will be leading players for South Carolina by averaging 12.9 points a game and making sure she stays big in the paint to get her own rebounds or her teammates. Chloe Kitts is the main player who makes sure she comes up strong to get every last memory in every game she plays, which she averages 7.6 a game. Raven Johnson, who is the great guard, makes sure she assists, averaging three, and works the ball movement around the court as well as attacking, getting steals, and putting up 1.6. Sania Feagin gets her blocks in carefully with a number of 1.6; she stays tall and big, getting a block every chance she gets.
Since the Huskies season has begun, this is the first time playing them outside of the regular teams in their conference, so this will be a challenge to initiate with only because it's a bigger level conference team like the Gamecocks you're going up against who have an all-around high percentage field goal team, and they all work together having that player winning mentality so they don't play too loose; they will be fighting back to regain their undefeated title. By UConn losing to Tennessee, it was bound to happen because they hadn't taken them down since 2007 for the first time. In that game, Strong was able to contribute 18 points on the board, but Zee Spearman shot the last bucket with 12 seconds left to put Tennessee in the lead for victory. Spearman had scored 18 points that night. This matchup against UConn and South Carolina won't be a game you don't want to miss; the defense will be intensive as well as the offense, and buckets will go up, and fast breaks will come on the court.
