Chargers Must Add to This Position Room

NFL

The Los Angeles Chargers during the 2025 offseason so far have been able to fill holes within their roster. Instead of swinging big for a player who will command a lot of money, the Bolts are smoothing out the edges of their roster. The additions of Najee Harris, Tyler Conklin, and Naquan Jones are prime examples of that. The Chargers also made some additions in their secondary with Donte Jackson and Benjamin St-Juste. However, with the season nearing, the Chargers could greatly benefit from adding one more dynamic veteran player to their cornerback room.

As mentioned above, the Chargers added two veteran cornerbacks already. The Bolts did the same thing last year with Kristian Fulton and saw it pay great dividends. This was considered a weakness going into the 2024 season and ended up being a strength. This season, the Chargers could be banking on the continuing emergence of Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart to complement the additions of Jackson and St-Juste.

However, Joe Hortiz and the Chargers could be wise to add one more top cornerback to their room. Still and Hart are young, inexperienced defensive backs. They can not be expected to hold down the secondary for a whole season even though they are capable of doing so. Jackson has been a fine player throughout his career while St-Juste has shown signs of struggling. Adding a possible true cornerback one to the team would be smart and they are a lot of options the Chargers can go in.

The most obvious scenario is trading for Jalen Ramsey. He has a strong connection with the city of Los Angeles and Derwin James. Ramsey has shown he can still be elite despite his age, but the true concern is the amount of money he will be getting. Other options that could be cheaper are Stephon Gilmore who is always reliable, Rasul Douglas, or James Bradberry

Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter mentioned how defensive backs are critical pieces in his defense. Minter also talked about how he would like to run more man-to-man. This is coming after the Chargers ran the most zone coverage in the league. To run man, a real lockdown cornerback is needed. Adding one of these players to the Charger's current cornerback room could allow Minter to get flexible with his defensive play calling.
