Is the Nuggets Latest Loss Against the Thunder Telling of Denver’s Future?
The Denver Nuggets took a rough 127-103 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on March 9th, 2025, adding to concerns about where they’re headed in the Western Conference. While Nikola Jokić has been on a historic run, including his recent 30-20-20 performance against the Phoenix Suns, the team's overall inconsistency and inefficiency have become very noticeable as of late. Whether it was the lack of performance from the bench players, or fellow stars on the team, the Denver Nuggets most certainly need a moment of reflection. One of the biggest takeaways from this game was how little help Jokić got when it mattered most.
The reigning MVP did his part with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists, but his teammates just couldn’t step up. Jamal Murray had 17 points but struggled with his shot, going just six-for-17, which has been an ongoing issue in big games. Meanwhile, Russell Westbrook had a rough night, finishing with just four points on 11% shooting. Westbrook has shown signs of importance on this team involving intensity, but the Denver Nuggets will need more than the consistency of effort from just him alone.
Denver’s problems go way beyond just one bad game. They’ve been relying on Jokić to do everything, and while he’s more than capable of taking over, it isn’t sustainable for an entire playoff push. Their role players just haven't been consistent enough, and against elite teams like OKC, that weakness gets exposed. If they don’t figure things out soon, their championship hopes could take a serious hit.
This loss also put Denver’s defensive struggles on full display. The Thunder took advantage of their weaknesses, especially in transition and down the stretch. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had his way with them, dropping 40 points and exposing just how vulnerable they are against elite guards. With a lack of strong wing defenders and inconsistent scoring from key players, the Nuggets have a lot to figure out if they want to keep up with the best teams in the Western Conference.
Looking ahead, if this becomes a bigger issue, Denver's front office might need to take a hard look at the roster. Jokić is still in his prime, but he can't carry the team by himself. If Murray and the others can't step up, the Nuggets may have to make some moves to bring in more consistent scoring and defensive help. Otherwise, they risk letting Jokić’s incredible performances go to waste and fall short of their championship goals.
