Packers Reaffirm 2023 Draft Pick’s Role After Draft Additions
With the Packers adding new wide receivers Matthew Golden and Savion Williams in the draft, the same question resurfaces: Who will be Jordan Love’s go-to guy? It’s something fans always wonder about, but it seems even Jayden Reed has been thinking about it. According to Adam Schefter, general manager Brian Gutekunst recently met with Reed’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to clarify where Reed stands after the draft. The Packers made it clear that Reed remains their top receiver, and his role on the team is not expected to change.
Now entering his third season, Reed has become a key piece in Green Bay’s offense. He led the team in receptions and receiving yards during his first two seasons, tallying 119 catches for 1,650 yards and 14 touchdowns. Reed’s speed and playmaking ability helped him rise quickly up the depth chart, but even with his solid production, the receiver group didn’t exactly impress last year. That’s likely why the Packers felt the need to invest in more weapons for Love by drafting Golden and Williams.
Reed had a productive year overall, but not without a few concerns. One stat that stands out is the 10 dropped passes he had last season, which was the third-most in the league according to Pro Football Focus. Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean his spot is in jeopardy. Reed and Golden offer different skill sets and will likely complement each other on the field. There’s room for both of them to thrive, and trying to compare who will outrank the other only distracts from the bigger picture.
Whether Reed keeps the top spot or Golden rises through the ranks like Reed once did, it’s a win-win for the Packers. Friendly competition within the team can only push these players to be better. Fans should be encouraged by the depth and potential at the position. At the end of the day, as long as these receivers help Jordan Love succeed, it shouldn’t matter who ends up with the most catches or yards. What matters is that they’re both wearing green and gold and working toward the same goal.
