Should Dak Prescott Have Won MVP in 2023? Could He Win in 2025?

NFL

In the most recent NFL honors, Josh Allen, quarterback of the Buffalo Bills, was crowned as the 2024 League MVP, winning over Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. The voting was the closest it has ever been in league history, with Jackson edging out Allen in first-place votes but Allen winning in total votes. The decision caused uproar around the NFL world as many felt Jackson deserved to win his third MVP. Jackson would have better stats than Allen, having a better completion percentage, 66.7 percent to 63.6 percent, more passing yards, 4172 to 3731, a better passer rating, 119.6 to 101.4, more total touchdowns, 45 to 40, and fewer interceptions, four to six. While many believed Jackson should have won MVP this season, a similar story occurred last season with Dak Prescott and Jackson, where Prescott would finish second to Jackson in the MVP voting.

2023 Season

Prescott last season had his best season to date, leading Dallas to the second seed in the NFC at 12-5. He would have a rough start to the season where he would throw only six touchdowns and have four interceptions in the first six weeks of the season. He capped off Week Six with a loss to the San Francisco 49ers before the bye week, throwing three interceptions in the Bay. However, Prescott would turn the narrative around him and the Cowboys very quickly. He would lead Dallas to a win against the Chargers in Los Angeles after the bye, which would be the turning point for Dallas's season. Prescott would go on to throw 30 touchdowns and rush for two after the bye, only throwing five interceptions in the process. He would have six different games of throwing for three or more touchdowns, with his most impressive game coming against the Seattle Seahawks in a 41-35 shootout on Thursday Night Football. He would end the season with 4758 total yards, 38 total touchdowns, 11 picks, a 69.4 percent completion percentage, and a 105.9 passer rating. All stats would rank higher than Jackson's stats during his MVP campaign that season.

Redemption?

As many Dallas and NFL fans believed that Prescott deserved the 2023 NFL MVP, history cannot be rewritten. However, that does not mean he cannot win an MVP in the coming years. Many Dallas haters would laugh at the statement, but who says Prescott, who came second in MVP once, cannot overcome that placement? With the promotion of coach Brian Schottenheimer, he fully believes in Prescott’s ability and praises him as a top quarterback in the game. Dallas might lack true star weapons besides Ceedee Lamb, but an addition in the draft by the name of Luther Burden or Ashton Jeanty could revitalize the Cowboys’ offense. Prescott has already shown he can lead Dallas to high offensive numbers, as he was the catalyst for them having one of the highest-scoring offenses from 2021 to 2023. With new offensive weapons and a new staff who fully believes in him, Prescott surely has an opportunity to become an NFL MVP one day.
