Should the Lions Target the Rams Veteran Receiver This Offseason?
Even the best players in the league are not safe from trades. Cooper Kupp is one of the more recent victims of a team trading a player that helped build the team up in the first place. Seemingly blindsided by the news, Cooper Kupp took to Instagram to inform the public that the Los Angeles Rams were looking to trade him. He explained that it was never his intention to be traded and wished that he could have finished the rest of his NFL career as a Ram. This is great news for the Detroit Lions, who need to add wide receivers to their arsenal.
Why Cooper Kupp Is an Asset
Cooper Kupp is the farthest thing from a bust that there ever was. He and Matthew Stafford took the Rams from being a below-average team to Super Bowl Champions. In Super Bowl LVI, Cooper Kupp took home the Super Bowl MVP along with his first Super Bowl ring. That season, Kupp finished with 145 receptions and 1,947 yards with 16 touchdowns. Cooper Kupp was the foundation of that championship football team. Now, he is being tossed away like trash. This makes him much more valuable to the Lions because now he has something to prove. Lions fans know from Jared Goff that when Sean McVay discards his key players, the Lions make them shine better than he ever could.
If this trade goes through, then the Lions receiving core will be better than it ever has been. Jameson Williams, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Cooper Kupp will fill the backfield. Having talented wide receivers will make Jared Goff’s job easy. Cooper Kupp would play better than he ever has because he would have a chip on his shoulder. He would have something to prove. If the Lions want to get better, they should pursue a trade as soon as possible.
