Two SEC Rivals Set for Historic Clash
If you are a fan of college sports, then you probably know about the Iron Bowl. The classic rivalry between Auburn and Alabama is known best for the moments made on the gridiron, but on Saturday afternoon, the Iron Bowl rivalry will be intense on the hardwood. For the first time in SEC history, the number one and two teams in the country will play each other in basketball. The stakes could not be any higher for a rivalry game of this magnitude. This will be the biggest game in the history of the rivalry and will have major ramifications on seeding for the NCAA Tournament, with the number-one overall seed on the line in this game.
These two teams have been the anchors for a dominant SEC this season, which is projected to break the record for most teams in a single NCAA Tournament. Both these teams will look to win with contrasting styles. Auburn is the most balanced team in the country, ranks number-one in offensive efficiency, and is a top 20 defensive team. Alabama plays with the fastest pace in the country and scores at a high rate; they have scored over 100 points in seven games this season and averaged almost 10 three-pointers a game. In matchups like this, the Tigers will need to rely on their experience. Auburn has nine seniors and has one of the deepest rosters in the country. Johni Broome is the leader for Auburn and is the favorite to win the Wooden Award this season. Broome is averaging a double-double this season with 18 points and 10 rebounds a game. The Crimson Tide is led by Mark Sears, one of the country’s best point guards. The fifth-year senior is averaging 17 points this season and shooting 35 percent from the three-point line this season.
This matchup also signifies a shift in expectations for southern schools. For the longest time, if players wanted to win National Championships, they would go to the traditional blue-blood schools; however, that no longer has to be the case due to the coaches and players changing the culture at traditional southern football schools. Both Auburn and Alabama have produced nine first-round picks in the NBA Draft since 2018. The Tigers and Crimson Tide have established themselves as consistent contenders for National Championships in the years to come.
Expectations are high for a showdown between these two rivals to not only live up to the hype but also exceed expectations. For a state that does not have pro sports teams, Alabama is now at the center of the college basketball universe. Both fan bases have a lot of pride and don’t want to lose to their rivals. However, 24 hours after Valentine’s Day, one fanbase will be left with their hearts shattered.
