What Offseason Questions Do the Cowboys Need to Answer?
After a disappointing 7-10 season for the Dallas Cowboys, they will be eyeing a huge bounce back in 2025. Micah Parsons is as confident as ever saying his squad is going to be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy a year from now. Parsons is one of the Cowboys’ many offseason questions to answer as he enters 2025 in the last year of his rookie contract and is due for an extension. Both Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb saw their contracts extended in the last year and now it is Parsons’ turn to get paid and deservingly so.
While Jerry Jones will do what he can to keep his key pieces, the offseason also brings the opportunity to add more players via free agency and the draft. There is no question that the Cowboys’ offense needs another running back to complement Rico Dowdle and this year's running back class brings opportunity. Two standout options are Heisman Trophy runner-up, Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, and Arizona State’s feisty Cam Skattebo. The Dallas Cowboys will draft 12th in the 2025 NFL Draft and regardless of who they take, it will be surrounded by criticism.
Possibly the most important question for Jerry Jones is what to do with Mike McCarthy. The NFL has had some shake-up in the head coaching world and it will be interesting to see whether it inspires the Cowboys to keep McCarthy or roll the dice. McCarthy has yet to prove he can bring Dallas success in the postseason and has even missed the playoffs in two of the five years he has been head coach of the Cowboys. McCarthy found success at his previous job winning a Super Bowl as head coach of the Green Bay Packers and he will be expected to find the same success with the Cowboys in the not-too-distant future.
I think it might be safe to say fans are growing tired of Jerry Jones’ decision-making and have to wonder whether his mind is more focused on winning or if he is just satisfied with profiting. The Dallas Cowboys are worth over $10 billion and haven’t seen a NFC Conference title since the 90s. There is a lot of work to do to turn around the team’s 2024 performance. There is no doubt the organization has the resources to produce a championship-winning team, and the path begins now, during the offseason, long before the 2025 NFL season begins.
