What Signing a Former Commanders DB Will Bring to the New Orleans Saints
Someone must have hung a horseshoe in the locker room, found a four-leaf clover outside the stadium, or lit a candle in a church because the luck of the New Orleans Saints has improved within the past week. This turnaround in their fortunes started with one of their most essential players, who had been sidelined due to an injury last season, having recovered and was activated to play for the first time this season. Next, a deal was signed to keep the Saints in their birthplace for another decade, with the possibility of another 20 years due to renewals on the lease. What may be the most important indication that the prayers of the fans were answered was their initial win of the season at home with a score of 26-14 against the New York Giants. To capitalize on these wins and improve their chances for another victory, cornerback Michael Davis was signed to the team.
Let’s take a look at Mr. Davis’ professional football resume. Michael began his NFL career in 2017 when he was signed by the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent. During his seven seasons in the “City of Angels,” he would start as a left cornerback during the majority of the 107 games he played. From those games, he would go on to rack up 275 solo tackles, 81 assists on tackles, and one QB hit. One of his most notable stats as a Charger is associated with the one touchdown he has scored, occurring in 2020 during Week Four, in which he picked off Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady in the first quarter and returned the ball to the end zone for a 76-yard touchdown. Davis’ career in Los Angeles would come to an end when, in March 2024, he signed a one-year contract to play for the Washington Commanders. In the 15 games he played, and two of those he started, Michael would add to his stats seven solo tackles, seven assists on tackles, and one pass deflection. He hasn’t played any games in this current season, but that will likely change within the next few weeks.
When you look at Davis’ history throughout his eight seasons in the NFL, it was a good choice for head coach Kellen Moore to sign this 30-year-old to his team. His new teammates and current starting cornerbacks, Kool-Aid McKinstry and Alontae Taylor, are already putting up some good numbers from five games with 30 solo tackles, 12 assists on tackles, and seven pass deflections. Bringing in this veteran player will further strengthen the defense and reinforce its reputation of being among the best in the league. Hopefully, this new addition will help the Saints and the city of New Orleans believe in the Cajun French saying, "Laissez les bons temps rouler,” or “Let the good times roll,” to take them all the way to the playoffs.
