Why Jason Witten Could Become Coach of the Dallas Cowboys One Day

NFL

After the long debate on whether the Cowboys should resign Mike McCarthy, the answer was chosen. Recently the Cowboys decided to part ways with coach Mike McCarthy, who had a somewhat successful tenure in Dallas. He provided three straight 12-5 seasons but lacked postseason success, only winning one playoff game. Due to the departure, several names have come up to be the next coach of the Cowboys. Former Cowboys offensive coordinator and current Eagles play caller Kellen Moore is a main contender for the job. Primetime Deion Sanders, current coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, has been another potential candidate in the mix for the job. However, the most intriguing option is former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten. It might seem far-fetched, but it makes sense when it’s thought out.

There are a couple of reasons why Jerry Jones could choose Jason Witten as the next coach. For starters, Jones envies Dan Campbell's style in Detroit. Witten, being a former player, could be Dallas’ Dan Campbell, and there is nothing Jerry Jones loves more than being homegrown right in Dallas. Witten does lack the true experience of being involved in coaching at the higher levels, but he does have two State Championships under his belt coaching his son’s high school team. Witten's other advantage to becoming head coach is his familiarity with the Cowboys. He knows how the operation of the team works, as he spent all of his Hall of Fame career playing in Dallas. Witten, having already built a connection with the Jones family, would be a huge bonus for him. Jerry and Stephen Jones could also be able to handle a rookie head coach in Witten easier than compared to other experienced coaches. For Witten to become a successful first-time head coach without experience, the Cowboys have to surround him with a valid supporting cast that will allow Witten to focus on the culture and team-building aspects more than everything all at once. If they can surround Witten with a vital cast, he might be able to make it work.

With all being said, it is still very unlikely Witten is to become the next Dallas Cowboys coach. This does not mean, however, that it cannot happen. A reasonable idea that has been floating in Cowboys media is that during this head coach search for Dallas, they could recommend adding Witten to the new staff. He could gain some experience being a position coach and become acclimated with how the NFL is from a coaching aspect. Then it would not be wrong to think that eventually down the line, when this upcoming coach is done, Jason Witten could be a strong candidate for the job. At this point, Witten would have all the boxes checked for Dallas, being a homegrown talent, someone familiar with how the organization is run, and having the potential to create a new culture.
