Why Letting Barkley Go Was the Giants Biggest Mistake
If you're a New York Football Giants fan, it’s been a really tough season. The Giants had one of the greatest team assets, but they let him go just as they usually do with most of their decent players. The legend of Saquon Barkley is something that everyone knows about, even those who don’t watch football or the Giants. Now that Barkley is going to the Super Bowl, the Giants franchise and their beloved fans have to sit back and watch him take off without them. These are some of the many reasons the Giants’ management should not have let him go in the first place.
When Barkley played for the Giants the last few seasons, he was the Giants. He knew how to get the ball moving. He also knew how to get the ball down the field, something that the entire Giants’ offense struggled with. The Giants ran him so much at one point during the season that the league fined them for it. This past season, he easily ran over 2,000 yards in total this season. If he had stayed with the Giants, Barkley and Malik Nabers, who is just like the three-time Pro Bowler and had an amazing season in his way, would have gotten things done this season, and most likely, the Giants would have moved ahead into the playoffs.
The Giants during that time should have honestly chosen him over the former Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. Instead, the Giants franchise-tagged him, and Barkley already knew how great he was and felt like he had been cast off by the team. Following that year, they allowed him to enter into free agency. Another one of the huge classic mistakes on the Giants’ part.
Playing for the Giants, Barkley’s stats were out of the water. He had a total of 21 touchdowns, 1,201 attempts, and rushed for 5,211 yards across the several seasons he was with them. This was only throughout several seasons that he had trouble making happen due to the way the Giants were playing. His first season with the Eagles was different. Everything he did over several seasons, he did in exactly one season, ran for 2,005 yards, scored 13 touchdowns, and had 345 attempts in total for this season alone.
The Giants blew it on this one, and now they and everyone have to sit back and suffer as they watch him move forward in Philadelphia for as long as he plays. He could have been great if the Giants had just given him more to work with. However, they let him go in favor of the quarterback who led them to the Wild Card Round that season but who would no longer be with the team two seasons later. The Giants are regretting ever letting him as he enters his very first Super Bowl on February 9th.
