Why Next Season Is Huge for Moussa Diabate

NBA

Last season was one to forget for Charlotte Hornets fans, as the team endured an abysmal 19-63 season. However, bright spots were showcased through offensive spurts from Mark Williams and Miles Bridges. Another one of those bright spots came from Moussa Diabate. The former Michigan Wolverine started the season in the G-League playing for the Greensboro Swarm. However, when he got the call-up in November, he took advantage of the opportunity. Diabate nearly averaged a double-double, and was and was a dominant force on the glass. He was rewarded for his work when the Hornets converted his two-way contract into a three-year deal worth five million dollars in February. Now, with a new contract, many fans have wondered can this former 2022 draft pick can keep building on the promising season he had last year.

Affectionately known as “The Moose,” Diabate played in 71 games last year, the most of any Hornets player. Now, the Hornets will look for him to be featured more prominently next season, especially if they trade Mark Williams. If they do not trade Williams, Diabate is expected to be the backup center. However, if he wants to solidify that spot, the former five-star recruit will have to develop a consistent three-point shot. Last season, 92 percent of his scoring came from inside the paint. That is all fine and good, but in today’s game, almost every player needs an outside shot. The 23-year-old has the mechanics to add the shot to his game, it’s just that he does not attempt a lot of outside shots. Last season, Diabate only attempted six shots from long range and did not sink any of them.

Developing an outside shot is crucial to take the next step in his career. Moussa Diabate has the skills to contribute to this team in the long run. However, after signing his new contract, the first year is important to see if he is truly worth the deal. The Hornets believe he is, and only time will tell if Diabate can take the next step in his game, or if he will be just be another rim protector and paint scorer.
