Why the Giants Should Pass on the Aging Superstar for Their Quarterback Solution

NFL

The Giants are still on the hunt to fill their open quarterback position. There was much talk that they were going to land the Los Angeles Rams current quarterback Matthew Stafford. However, things fell through for New York when both Stafford and the Rams came to a new deal and a reconstruction of his contract. Now, the Giants need to start looking in other directions. New York has the NFL Draft coming up in April to try and land a new quarterback, but they have to look elsewhere.

They are currently looking towards veteran quarterback and Super Bowl Champion, Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers can go anywhere at this point, as he is anticipated to be let go from the New York Jets. This is not the best idea and this is not the worst idea that the Giants have had. At this point, New York is grasping at straws to get the position filled before the new season starts. Here are the top three reasons why it would be a mistake for the Giants to sign Rodgers to the team.

1. His Age

Rodgers’ age is one of the biggest factors as to what’s stopping him from playing for any more NFL teams. He is now 41 years old and hasn't planned on retiring anytime soon. He signed with the Jets two seasons ago and only played one season with them. The first season he was with them, he was injured in the first game with a torn ACL. It took him much longer than expected to heal from the injury and he could not return to the playing field until the following season. While playing for the Jets, his age truly showed when Rodgers had trouble moving up and down the field. This quarterback doesn't do a lot of running anymore, he can still pull off throwing deep passes, but not as much as he used to.

2. Rodgers Hasn’t Been in His Prime Since His Packers Days

Rodgers has not been in his prime since his earlier days with the Packers. When he was with this team, he had several great seasons with them. He even took them to the Super Bowl once during his career. He is currently 12-10 in his playoff career. The last time he went to the playoffs was in 2022 when he was still with Green Bay. As well, the last time Rodgers won a Super Bowl was in 2011 when the Packers went to Super Bowl 45. Between 2021 and 2022, the team went to the NFC Championship and Divisional Round, but they could not go any further than that. Since then, Rodgers signed with the Jets and it has been all downhill since. The Jets finished with a 5-12 record, even with Rodgers in as their quarterback. Many were hoping that he would take the Jets to the playoffs.

3. The Giants Management Will Just Take Anybody at This Point

The Giants are just desperate at this point to get anyone in to fill the position. They are looking in all directions as to who they can get onto the field and fill their vacant position at this point. They want big names that they know can make something happen on the field. They have looked at Kirk Cousins, Stafford, and even everything that is up in the air with the NFL Draft at the moment. The Giants have watched all of these quarterbacks make moves. They have contemplated and talked about a lot of what they think they should do. They want someone who can be a much better fit and can make the connections. If the Giants need to have Rodgers on the roster for the season, then so be it, they will just have to continue to rebuild between this offseason and next offseason.
