Why the Tag Team Match at Money in the Bank Is a Useless Match
At WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, Cody Rhodes returned to save Jey Uso and challenged John Cena and Logan Paul to a tag team match at Money in the Bank. Uso successfully defended his World Heavyweight Championship at Saturday Night’s Main Event against Paul with the help of Rhodes, despite Cena’s attempt to cost him the match. This challenge was accepted, but it was met with a negative reaction online. The World Heavyweight Champion and Undisputed WWE Champion going at it in a match should sound intriguing, but there are multiple reasons why it isn’t.
John Cena and Cody Rhodes already faced off at WrestleMania 41, and even though Cena won the Undisputed WWE Championship and became a 17-time champion, the match was very lackluster. Many assumed that the two would run it back eventually in 2025, but to do so less than two months following their Mania match feels rushed. Jey Uso has already successfully defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Logan Paul, and the two do not have an intriguing enough story to keep the rivalry going. However, the biggest reason why this match makes no sense and is not intriguing is that other matches would have been perfect.
Many fans were expecting to see John Cena have his last match against CM Punk at Money in the Bank 2025, as that PLE is what made their rivalry so iconic. At Money in the Bank 2011, Punk defeated Cena for the WWE Championship, and then followed it up with the infamous moment of him kissing Vince McMahon goodbye and leaving with the title. That is not the only marquee match that should’ve happened, as Uso has been feuding with Seth Rollins recently, and a match against him at Money in the Bank would have been much more exciting. As for Cody Rhodes, coming back at Money in the Bank following the Cena vs. Punk match would have been the perfect time to return.
It’s clear that the WWE made the wrong decision by booking Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso vs. John Cena and Logan Paul. Now, neither World Champion is in a title match in what is supposed to be one of the most important WWE PLEs of the year. This storyline of Cena trying to “ruin wrestling” is simply not a good one, and bad decisions should not be excused by kayfabe. Cena has had a lackluster retirement tour so far, and something needs to change as this current run and character is just not working.
