Will the NFL’s Biggest Remaining Free Agent Finally Make His Move?

NFL

Aaron Rodgers has been awfully quiet during this offseason. He still remains a free agent and has not signed with any teams. There are a lot of things that are currently playing into where he wants to go or what he wants to do this coming season. A lot of fans have been anticipating what he is going to do, but nothing has come about yet as to whether he is going to play once again or if he is going to finally make his way into retirement.

At the moment, Rodgers, at 41 years old, is now officially the oldest standing quarterback in the NFL. Despite him not having a team yet, the Pittsburgh Steelers have shown interest in signing him to their roster. There have been very few other teams that Rodgers has spoken to also but he has been quiet about speaking too. However, he has yet to make a commitment to any team that has sent an offer his way or that he has met with during this season.

For the last two years, Rodgers has played with the New York Jets. His first season with the Jets started in 2023. In his first year with them, he didn’t play at all because he was out with a torn ACL injury. The following year, in the 2024 season, he made his official debut and finished the season 5-12 before being let go at the end of the year.

That said, the Steelers have moved ahead without him and have started their OTAs. The Steelers will continue to move ahead because their scheduled mini-camps start on June 10th. They have relied on their young quarterbacks, such as Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and their rookie Will Howard. They are continuing to wait for a response from him, but they have not heard anything from him in a while. Rodgers is currently waiting this one out to see if he will get an offer from elsewhere.

The teams that have been ruled out that he does not wish to play for were both the New Orleans Saints and the Chicago Bears. He does not wish to play for the Saints because he has no desire to live or play in the Louisiana area. He has also dismissed the idea of playing for the Bears. However, Rodgers has hinted that he may visit during the regular season for a matchup possibly involving the Steelers.

Rodgers has his decisions laid out in front of him, but has yet to choose any of them. He may also be sitting back and looking at the idea of retirement for this coming season. When Rodgers was with the Jets, the last time he had a physical, he had failed to pass it, making him a liability for the team. This Super Bowl-winning veteran has also stated that if he does retire, he would like to retire as a Green Bay Packer if they ask him. His future with the NFL remains to be seen at the moment.
