Golf 2025 Player Profile: Jason Day

Few players in professional golf have experienced the highs and lows of the sport quite like Jason Day. From reaching world number-one ranking and capturing a Major Championship to battling injuries and struggling with consistency, the Australian has seen it all. Yet, through it all, Day’s resilience and elite talent have kept him relevant on the PGA Tour. Now entering the 2025 season, the question is, can he recapture the form that once made him one of the most dominant players in the world? Is he one of the players we predict will capture one of the Major Championships this year?

Current Official World Golf Ranking: 32nd

Career Wins: 13

Career Major Wins: One

Career Summary

Day turned professional in 2006 and joined the PGA Tour in 2008. He has a total of 13 career wins and one Major Championship win. He’s also spent a cumulative total of 51 weeks as the world number-one player back in the 2016-2017 seasons. The Australian’s best stretch of golf came in 2014-2016, where he rattled off eight total wins, including the 2015 BMW Championship, the 2015 Farmers Insurance Open, the 2016 Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the 2016 Players Championship, just to name a few. He even won the 2015 PGA Championship during this stretch. The 37-year-old has played in 358 events, making the cut 276 times, finished runner-up 11 times, has seven third-place finishes, has 57 top-five finishes, and 96 top 10 finishes. Day has played in 52 Major Championships, made the cut 40 times, won the 2015 PGA Championship, and has a runner-up finish at the 2011 Masters, a runner-up at the 2011 and 2013 U.S. Open Championship, a 2016 runner-up at the PGA Championship, and a runner-up at the 2023 Open Championship. There was certainly a notable drop in form between 2019 and 2022 when Day was dealing with injuries, particularly with his back. He famously began working with a new swing coach to completely change his swing and help alleviate some of the pressure on his back. In the past few years, he’s had almost a resurgence in form as he’s grown to trust his new swing more and more. This hard work came to fruition when he won the 2023 Byron Nelson. He has also been picked for the International President’s Cup Team five times and represented Australia in the 2024 Olympic Games. Day is currently ranked 57th in strokes gained total, 80th in strokes gained off the tee, 17th in strokes gained on approach shots, 53rd in strokes gained around the green, and 161st in strokes gained putting. He is currently the 32nd-ranked player on the Official World Golf Rankings.

2025 Expectations

Day has played in four events so far in 2025. He finished tied for 40th at the Sentry in Hawaii, tied for third at the American Express in California, tied for 32nd at the Farmers Insurance Open in California, and tied for 13th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California. The Australian’s career resurgence has been one of the best storylines in golf, but 2025 will be the real test of whether he can truly return to the game’s elite. His swing changes and improved health have helped him regain consistency, but his ability to close out tournaments and compete in Majors will define the future Hall-of-Famer's season. The expectations for the remainder of Jason Day’s 2025 are one or more tour wins, will contend at one or more Major Championships, specifically at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, and will finish ranked in the top 30 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
