Two-Time World Series Champion Signs with the Red Sox

MLB

After nine outstanding years with the Houston Astros, Alex Bregman entered free agency and found a new home for the first time in his career. The Astros prioritized Jose Altuve and his extension in the 2024 offseason and were unable to get anything done with Bregman. The Red Sox signed the third baseman to a three-year deal for $120 million. Bregman hinted at his departure from Houston towards the end of the 2024 season and received a standing ovation in his last home game. Bregman was a big part of the powerhouse Astros team that continued to run the American League. After being without a solidified third baseman for the past couple of years, the Red Sox have finally filled that void with Bregman. He will add depth to the already deep Boston lineup. Not only does he add an all-star bat into the lineup, but he also adds lockdown defense at third base.

Bregman has been one of the most consistent offensive players ever since he made his debut in 2016. In his second year, he helped the Astros win the first-ever World Series title in franchise history. In his third year, he was an all-star and finished fifth in MVP voting. He followed that up again with an outstanding offensive season finishing second in MVP voting with a .296 batting average and 1.015 OPS. Since Bregman made his debut, the Astros only missed the playoffs one time and that was the year he made his debut. He has proven to be a great locker-room presence and makes a big impact on the field.

Even though 2024 was statistically the worst year in terms of Bregman’s standards, he was still above a league-average hitter. Bregman has never had back-to-back seasons with below a .800 OPS. If that pattern repeats that means he will be back above that line in the 2025 season. The Red Sox hope to get the old Bregman hitting close to .300 and close to 100 RBI. However, if they can continue to get the same consistent production from him, they will not be disappointed. Another big plus to Bregman’s game is that he always finds a way to stay on the field. He’s always healthy and you know he is going to be at third base for 90% of the games in the year. If he continues to produce as he does then the deal will prove to be of tremendous value.
