Why DeVonta Smith Is the X-Factor Against the Cowboys

NFL

The Eagles head down south to Dallas in a pivotal mid-season battle. For Philadelphia, there is certainly more at stake than the Cowboys. With quarterback Dak Prescott being sidelined for at least six to eight weeks, Dallas’ playoff hopes are certainly in limbo. Last week against Jacksonville, DeVonta Smith recorded four receptions and 87 yards, paired with an incredible touchdown in the fourth quarter. In the second half, Smith practically took over. Without Smith last week, the Eagles were in great jeopardy of losing at home. For the Eagles to pull away with their fifth consecutive victory, Smith could be in for a massive day in Dallas.

There is a reasonable belief that Smith could eclipse 100 receiving yards on Sunday afternoon. Smith’s recent performances and his ability in one-on-one coverage could provide the Dallas secondary with trouble. As a fast and elusive route runner, Smith’s ability to catch in traffic, even when contested, makes him one of the most reliable receivers in the game. If Smith can capitalize on gaining separation quickly with a great release off the line, the star receiver could be an ideal target for quick throws when Dallas brings pressure. The Cowboys have an aggressive pass rush and excel at creating disruption in the backfield, but this can also leave their cornerbacks on an island in one-on-one coverage.

For the Cowboys, if they focus heavily on stopping A.J. Brown, this will leave more opportunities for Smith. Ideally, Smith will continue to have great production in yards after the catch and be a target for a few deep throws. Continuing on, Smith and quarterback Jalen Hurts have continued to develop a strong connection as the season progresses, which is evident in the numbers. In a high-intensity game that Sunday will bring, Smith is certain to outshine the rest. When Philadelphia has been successful on the offensive side of the ball, the recipe is looking to Smith on key downs, especially in the red zone. The Cowboys have shown vulnerability against elite receivers, and if Smith can get separation, it is guaranteed he will have a massive day in Dallas. With the Eagles fighting for top playoff and divisional positioning, a big game from Smith could be exactly what they need to keep momentum going into the later part of the season.
